Physical Model of the Cochlea
Rabbitt, R.D. and Farmer, B.L. (1997). A live demonstration of a biomimetic cochlea dancing to music. Am. Soc. Mech. Eng. BED V 35:587-588.
A large physical model of the cochlea was constructed from 80 vertical plastic tubes, filled partially with water, sealed at the top, and connected together on the bottom with a continuous tube. Each tube is a tuned oscillator with the water providing mass and the sealed air column providing stiffness. Vibration was applied using an electromagnetic shaker at the high-frequency end to mimic motion of the stapes, which results in traveling waves inside the model. The mechanical vibration spectrum was shifted down ~40x relative to the sound. Design details are provided here. http://otology.bme.utah.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/97-ASME-CochPhysModel.pdf.
